John Edward Maher, 84, passed away on July 24, 2022 at Central Park Nursing Home, Syracuse. He was born in Utica, on September 24, 1937, a son of the late Walter and Florence Maher. John was a 1955 graduate of St. Francis de Sales High School and graduated from Utica College in 1976. He served in the United States Army from 1958-1961. John worked for General Electric, Utica, from 1962 to 1993. On July 31, 1965, he was united in marriage with Patricia M. Grabowski, a loving union of almost 46 years until her death in 2001. He was a longtime parishioner and volunteer at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Whitesboro. He was a coach for Little League and Babe Ruth baseball and CYO basketball for many years. He was also an avid golfer. John and Patricia spent many summers at the family camp on the St. Lawrence River, where he loved fishing, boating and family gatherings. John is survived by his three sons, John, Jim (and wife, Kimberly) and Bob (and wife, Amy). He is also survived by his six beloved grandchildren, John, Patrick, Thomas, Zachary, Julia and Andrew. He was predeceased by his siblings, Walter, Elizabeth, Carol and William. Calling hours for family and friends will be on Thursday, July 28th from 4PM - 6PM at the Heintz Funeral Home, 1517 Whitesboro St, Utica. The funeral will be held on Friday, July 29th at 11:30 a.m. at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Whitesboro, where his Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Whitesboro, at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations, in John’s name, to the Alzheimer’s Association ( ).
